The Therapeutic Power of Nature

One of the most effective therapeutic treatments does not involve advanced technologies or strong medications. Instead, it is simply accessible to utilize and has been shown to enhance one’s mental and physical health. Known by many names, such as eco-therapy, forest therapy, green therapy, and nature-based interventions, nature therapy is becoming a more prominent therapeutic method.

Chronic Pain Management

Many individuals find themselves living with chronic pain. Some of the most common include neck pain, musculoskeletal issues, lower back pain, and so many more. These individuals can benefit from nature therapy as it has been shown to relieve chronic pain. The best part is that it is typically free to undergo, and you can seek out treatment on your schedule as opposed to waiting days or weeks to see a traditional physician for pain management.

The effectiveness of nature therapy on chronic pain is thought to be due to three main factors. First is natural sunlight. This sunlight exposure is known to be linked to increased vitamin D production in the body. Vitamin D has been shown to lower chronic widespread pain, reduce inflammation, and enhance one’s overall mood.

The second component is physical exercise. Whether it is a steady-paced walk or vigorous garden maintenance, physical activity can help to reduce chronic pain. This is thought to be through reduced inflammation, decreased stress levels, better sleep, and enhanced mental health.

Thirdly, nature therapy tends to involve some form of social interaction. This social integration is known to positively affect a person’s perception of pain. Social support can also lead to improved mental health and lower inflammation levels of the body.

Tips for Safely Viewing the Upcoming Eclipse

Taking a trip into nature to view the upcoming solar eclipse is a great form of nature therapy. This attention-grabbing phenomenon happens when the moon travels between the Earth and the sun. The moon will actually shadow parts of the Earth as this happens because it blocks the natural sunlight. If you are thinking of heading out to view this rare phenomenon, it is important that you keep your safety in mind.

It is never a good idea to stare directly at the sun without some sort of eye protection. In fact, the sun’s natural rays can cause permanent damage to the retina, known medically as sun-induced retinopathy. To protect your vision, you will want to use specialized solar filter glasses. This will allow you to take in the rare scene without worrying about any potential damage to your eyesight.

Watching Nature is Highly Beneficial

While nature therapy works wonders thanks to its use of natural sunlight, physical exercise, and social interaction, its benefits do not stop there. The actual activity of viewing the nature around you and astrological events can greatly affect your overall health. More and more evidence is coming forward proving the positive effect that nature therapy has on a person’s mental health.

The cognitive effect that nature has on the mind is astounding. Research has shown that there is a very strong correlation between time spent in nature and a person’s cognitive abilities. Those who spend more time in nature show better attentional functioning, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. While the correlation between nature therapy and these cognitive benefits has not been fully explained, some theories involve reduced stress levels and reconnecting with our ancestral past.

Another area that has been heavily researched when it comes to nature therapy is its effect on a person’s overall happiness and mental health. Recent studies have revealed that those who have more access to green spaces in their communities are happier, entertain positive social interactions, and have a strong sense of meaning and purpose in life. Additionally, these professional studies have revealed that those exposed to greener, natural spaces are less likely to develop mental distress and disorders, such as mood disorders, depression, and substance use disorders.
