Cannabidiol: A Natural Remedy for Pain and Inflammation

by Barby Ingle

In more recent times, the world has heard a lot about this miracle remedy from the hemp plant called Cannabidiol. Many people have read about the possible benefit for various kinds of diseases such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. Despite all the success stories shared, some people still wonder if Cannabidiol or CBD oil is an excellent natural remedy for pain and inflammation. Cannabidiol is a natural remedy for pain and inflammation.

Pain and inflammation are very common symptoms for several diseases out there. According to John Hopkins Health Review, inflammation is found to be an underlying cause in many acute and common health conditions. The cause of pain is rooted in the underlying mechanisms of inflammation. Thus, inflammation is one of the pathological manifestations of conditions like hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, coronary artery disease, arthritis, cancer, and even depression.

According to John Hopkins Health Review, chronic inflammation has played a great role in both common and deadly diseases.

How Does Inflammation Play a Key Role in Health Conditions?

For humans, communication is necessary, not only with other people within our environment but also with the body’s organs and tissue systems. In the most basic terms, inflammation is the body’s immune system’s response to things like potentially harmful pathogens and bacteria. Inflammation is vital to the immune health in general because it acts as a protective mechanism against all kinds of pathogens, thereby giving the body adequate time to heal.

On the exterior, inflammation exhibits signs of heat, swelling, redness, chills, exhaustion, or loss of function. All of these symptoms occur because

the immune system is fighting off external stimulus at the cellular level and releasing hormones, B and T-cells, cytokines as well as plasma to protect healthy tissues and destroy those harmful invasions.

The real problem occurs when the harmful bacteria appear to be gone, but the action within the cells continue. In such scenarios, the acute inflammation has become chronic. Treating inflammation is very challenging because it is almost impossible to separate the natural immunological response from the chronic scenario. Essentially, medical practitioners are tasked with weakening the immune system to a level where chronic inflammation can be stopped while allowing the body to fight off bacteria. In most recent times, scientists have discovered that CBD possesses some potential in treating pain and inflammation.

CBD and the Endocannabinoid System

CBD is an extract of the cannabis, hemp plant and is created at the trichomes of the plant as a secondary metabolite. However, it is extracted without the “high” component of these plants (THC).  According to several researchers, when the CBD molecule interacts with the human body, it influences the endocannabinoid system. This system has two receptors, namely the CB1 and CB2 receptors found throughout the body. Surprisingly, CBD does not bind directly with these receptors but is a well-known antagonist that influences the entire system differently. Rather than bind or enhance the binding action, it reduces it and hence decreases inflammation in those areas.

CBD and Different Kinds of Pain and Inflammatory Conditions

Although, CBD has been studied extensively for many health conditions, studies concerning pain and inflammatory yield great potentials in terms of supporting CBD as the most effective natural cure. Some of these studies and their findings include:

  1. Acute inflammation

A 2011 study has shown that CBD significant impacts on inflammation brought about by oxidative stress and may be effective in reducing the risk of dysfunction and organ damage. Following this study, a similar report shows that cannabidiol may be used in limiting inflammation in the nervous system and brain, which can positively impact people experiencing conditions such as insomnia and neuropathic pain.

  1. Arthritis

Some studies have shown that CBD can reduce pain associated with arthritis without bringing about additional side effects. A 2017 study on CBD’s potential also showed that it could be used to mitigate not only arthritis but pain and inflammation associated with joint neuropathy. It was equally observed that CBD could also prevent joint pain, which indicates a potential for preventative inflammation treatment.

  1. Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune condition that affects the brain and nerves. One of the most common symptoms people with this condition experience is muscle spasms, and this brings about constant pain. A report in 2017 showed that short term use of CBD oil could help reduce a lot of symptoms attributed to multiple sclerosis.

  1. Chronic Pain

The same 2017 report also showed that CBD had been studied for pain. Several types of research and clinical trials compiled into this report show that CBD can be an effective treatment for chronic pain in adults. In another study by the Journal of Experimental Medicine, these results were strongly supported. However, these researchers further added that subjects were less likely to build tolerance for CBD and would not need increased doses continually.

Although CBD holds much promise, there is still a lot of skepticism about its cure-all claims. Therefore there is ongoing research on its long term effects on cell viability, hormone production, and fertilization. As research on CBD continues, several studies already in progress show that CBD may indeed be an excellent aid in pain and inflammatory management.
