For people who experience chronic pain, CBD oil is becoming increasingly popular as an effective remedy. According to a survey, more and more people are switching to CBD oil and replacing other prescription drugs or medicines for treating chronic pain. CBD oil has proven to treat a variety of medical conditions such as anxiety, pain, insomnia, and others very effectively. People are now using CBD oil to treat a variety of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
However, it is imperative that you understand how CBD works and relieves pain as it will help you understand the whole thing and clear the misconceptions regarding the use of CBD. Some people may experience side effects too and thus you must first consider some factors before using CBD oil. In this post I’ll give some real life examples and let you know what patients with chronic pain say about the use of CBD oil for pain management.
How does CBD oil work?
The CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis sativa plant. The extraction is carried out in several ways which include:
- Carbon dioxide extraction
- Liquid solvent extraction
- Oil extraction
After CBD oil is extracted, it is packaged and sold and can be used in lotions, foods, and other products. Research and studies are being done into how CBD oil alleviates pain, but there are lots of evidence that it interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system. This system influences how we feel and experience the pain. When CBD enters the body, it produces a ‘high’ feeling by affecting the brain’s receptors and in this way it relieves the pain.
Studies into the effectiveness of CBD oil for management of chronic pain:
People have been using marijuana for thousands of years for pain management, but now more research and studies are being done to find out the exact compounds that cause pain relief. Various researches have been done on rats which proved that CBD reduces pain. Now studies and researches are being conducted on humans too so that a better understanding of the whole process is achieved.
CBD for arthritis pain relief:
The research is still limited but Keith’s 2020 research says that CBD oil is very beneficial if you’re suffering from arthritis or joint pain. A 2018 study reveals that CBD works very well to reduce chronic pain. This review included research and studies that were done between the periods of 1975 to 2018. The review included examining various types of pains such as neuropathic pain, cancer pain, and fibromyalgia.
Another 2016 study examined the effect of CBD in rats with arthritis. The rats with arthritis were given doses of CBD daily and then the researchers noted that the overall pain and inflammation was reduced in the affected joints of the rats. However, researches also noted that rats that received around 0.6 to 3.1 mg of CBD dosage didn’t improve because of the low amounts. Rats who received the dosage of 6.2 mg/day had significant improvement in pain relief while those rats that received 62.3 mg/day had the same effects as the latter ones. This concluded that larger dosage of CBD doesn’t result in reducing more pain.
CBD for cancer pain relief:
CBD has found to be an effective remedy for relieving the pain caused by cancer. Studies on mice proved that CBD can reduce the size of the cancerous tumors and also the side effects of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy itself is a painful process and the side effects such as pain, vomiting, and lack of appetite add to the overall pain. There was a study conducted in 2010, in which it was revealed that a combination of THC-CBD extract proved to be an effective pain relief for cancer pain.
CBD for migraine pain relief:
Though the studies are very limited in this regard, CBD has also been found to reduce migraine pain. CBD when paired with THC, can be effective for treating migraine. A study was conducted in 2017 which indicated that CBD and THC when combined, can result in less intense pain in people who have migraine.
