Free Your Mind

by Barby Ingle

It’s hard to believe there’s anything outside of suffering, when that has been the majority of what our lives have consisted of.

It is natural, for all hope to seem lost and as though there’s no light at the end of any tunnel- we might believe we’re destined for dead ends, no relief and lack of quality or contentment in our lives.

Though I’ve come a long way from this place, I definitely have not only been there but also revisit on occasion.  Due to my approach, attitude, mind frame and what’s continually labeled as “positivity”, others might assume I’ve got it all figured out but I don’t believe that’s possible.

The first thing that should be taken into consideration, is that arriving to this point–  has required years of trial/error, obstacles, hurdles and a hell of a lot of pain in every sense and aspect.  It demanded I essentially ‘died’ to the versions of my past self which included but wasn’t limited to, releasing expectations, dreams, aspirations and attachment to just about everything in the traditional sense.

Secondly, it should be noted that this isn’t a route I’d necessarily chosen-  I only stumbled across the concepts discussed when all other avenues proved unsuccessful–  left with only the debilitation, that moment you’ve got to beg yourself to hang on or plead with the universe to give ya the strength to, is when we learn just how strong we truly are.  Unable to tolerate medications, allergic reactions, terrible side effects or even worsened symptoms!

Had I not opened my mind up to exploring something new, different, outta the norm or not within the bounds of my comfort zone, I write this with certainty:  I’d be dead.

I’ve witnessed many, so comfortable with their discomfort- they cling to it without even realizing– repeating their stories thereby relieving them each time- of course sharing/venting/speaking out is a very real part of healing but as is the acceptance and moving on.

So this year, it marks an official twenty years since my head began to hurt and I do celebrate having made it thus far because there were several instances when I wasn’t entirely sure I would.

As of now, I’ve moved on from the past and continue to venture farther from it each day because my conditions played too big of a role in my life, I often felt like I were a bystander to my own existence until I faced all this head on and chose to use this fuel to drive me toward actually living, as opposed to merely existing.

It is a process I’ll continue throughout the duration of my days here on the planet but having compromised on a co existence, cultivated open communication between my body + I, no longer pushing past my limits nor neglecting my self care has not only transformed my life but saved it.

Given current day adversity, we are seeing a shift to more willingness to accept and embrace the idea of Holistic Health.  I’m witnessing a vital need for us to be equipped with tools/skills within ourselves as opposed to remaining solely dependent on things elsewhere.

For example, what good is a cutting edge treatment I cannot afford or that I lack access to?

How does a medication that helps me, being taken away, help me?

Why should we have to decide between further complications via side effects or an opportunity for relief?

Who has the right to stand in-between what my doctor + I, feel is best for treatment?

Where in the declaration of patient rights does it state our best interests come second only after profit?

When will there be enough articles written or Capitol Hill trips taken to adequately address + rightfully explain these disparities as well as the basic needs of humanity before we’re heard?

This is all what led to the creation of Mimi’s Mini Migraine Manual–  a pocket sized guide to help others re-ground during those moments when the injections haven’t kicked in or the Triptan just ain’t cuttin’ it- complete with a foreword written by the Association of Migraine Disorders president himself, it’s legitimate–  resilience is real and this resource is free.
